The Food Systems for the Future Institute (FSFI), with honorary co-host Chef José Andrés, recently convened the 2026 Grocery Retail for All Summit. Participants explored critical strategies, including innovative financing, public-private partnerships, and sustainable procurement, to bolster the viability of local grocery retail.
Ambassador Ertharin Cousin, Founder and CEO of FSFI, emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration to drive systemic change. By addressing the operational ecosystem of community grocers, the Summit provided a roadmap for stakeholders to reduce waste, protect margins, and leverage data-driven decision-making. Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs noted that the collective focus is now on scaling what works to simultaneously improve public health outcomes and local economic stability.
The event concluded by honoring six organizations with the Grocery Retail Resilience & Innovation Award, led by top recipient Oasis Fresh Market. These awards highlight the commitment to building resilient food systems through grassroots leadership. Moving forward, FSFI plans to leverage these successful collaborations to continue advancing national strategies that ensure all communities have access to the fresh, healthy food they need to thrive.
