This study is crucial for guiding future investments and training in robotic surgery. By comparing new platforms against an established leader, it provides early insights into the feasibility and safety of diverse robotic systems, potentially broadening access to advanced minimally invasive colorectal procedures.
A pioneering multiplatform study, COMPAR-CRC, presents the first prospective comparison of robot-assisted colon resection outcomes using Da Vinci®, Hugo™ RAS, and Versius® systems. Expert colorectal surgeons conducted this exploratory study on 45 adult patients from February to December 2024. Its primary aim was to evaluate conversion rates to laparoscopy or open surgery and intra-operative complications across the three platforms, with 15 cases each.
Results demonstrated encouraging feasibility. The Da Vinci group reported no conversions, while Hugo™ RAS and Versius® recorded two and three conversions to laparoscopy, respectively. One instrument malfunction occurred with Hugo™ RAS; one surgical complication per group. No significant differences emerged in post-operative recovery or oncological outcomes, though Versius® cases required more frequent laparoscopic energy device use.
The COMPAR-CRC study confirms robotic colorectal surgery is feasible and safe with all three platforms when performed by experienced surgeons. Early outcomes are promising, indicating comparable initial safety. However, larger comparative trials are essential to definitively confirm long-term differences in recovery, oncological efficacy, and technical parameters among these advanced robotic surgical systems.
