Currently, most batteries are processed via low-value metallurgical recycling, while high-value pathways like power storage and direct material regeneration remain underdeveloped. This geographic disconnect between battery retirement hubs and industrial demand centers creates significant, untapped economic and environmental potential.
Researchers from Fudan University developed a province-level model demonstrating that prioritizing high-value battery utilization could yield three to five times higher cost savings than traditional methods. The analysis indicates that while batteries accumulate in eastern provinces, the demand for storage and recycling is concentrated elsewhere. Without a coordinated interprovincial transport network, the majority of these potential climate and economic gains remain locked, despite transport costs being negligible compared to the total benefits.
